Could you be a Candidate in the Council Elections 2026?
Your local borough needs you!
In May 2026, Greenwich borough will have the opportunity to elect a new council. Our Labour-run council has a consistent record of taking people for granted, poor decision making, and refusing to listen to residents.
The Liberal Democrats will improve social care, the NHS and promote growth in consultation with our communities. We want stronger ties to our European friends and to ensure our environment is fit for the next generation.
It is so important that we get our voice heard in the local council and stand up for our residents.
Greenwich Liberal Democrats plan to put candidates in all our wards in 2026. We need 55 people to stand which is why our approvals process is getting under way.
What does a councillor do?
As a local councillor, your residents will expect you to:
- respond and investigate people’s concerns (casework)
- communicate council decisions that affect them
- know your ward and identify issues
- know and work with representatives of local organisations, interest groups and businesses
- represent their views at council meetings
- lead local campaigns on their behalf
- act and conduct yourself in a manner that is appropriate for your role.
We are looking for people of all backgrounds, ages, beliefs, and experiences who reflect the diversity of our borough. People who care about their local communities. We are looking for people who will come out to support our target wards and get Lib Dem councillors elected locally.
To be a Liberal Democrat candidate you must meet all of the following:
- Are at least 18 years of age.
- A British citizen, an Irish citizen, a Commonwealth citizen or an EU citizen.
- Live or work in the London Borough of Greenwich
- Are not the subject of a bankruptcy restrictions order or interim order.
- Do not have any criminal sentences of more than three months in the last five years.
- Are not a paid employee of Greenwich Council
- Are a paid-up member of the Liberal Democrats (join us here)
- Agree with the aims and values of the Liberal Democrats (see our About Us page)
Approval Process
In all cases we need you to fill in an application form and have a short interview with us. It is important that we know you will be the right person to stand. After this an approval decision is made and if successful the candidate may apply to represent a ward when the elections are called - preferences as to type of ward and which ward you want to represent can be discussed at the interview.
Ward Targeting
We have different levels of activity in wards across the borough and the types of candidate we are looking for to reflect this.
Target Wards
In these wards we are aiming to get councillors elected in May 2026 and therefore candidates will be given full campaigning support from the local party to get elected. Candidates in target wards will need to make the time commitment required.
Development Wards
These wards are those where we are campaigning with a view to longer term success. Candidates in these wards will be expected to come and support campaigning in our target wards as well.
Other Wards.
In the remaining wards we are aiming to ensure local residents have Liberal Democrats on the ballot paper to support.
Giving more people the chance to vote Liberal Democrat is really important so your willingness to stand in these elections would be highly appreciated. Every vote for the Liberal Democrats is a vote to elect a strong local councillor who will fight for a fair deal for you and your community.
