Large swing to Lib Dems in council by-election

21 Dec 2024

The Greenwich Lib Dem campaigners were rewarded for their hard work with a 20% swing from the by-election voters in West Thamesmead on 19 December, with Lib Dem candidate Steve Day achieving 33% of the vote. Steve tweeted his thanks to his supporters and his ongoing commitment to people in the ward as a resident.

The campaign team received the following “shout out” in the monthly London Lib Dem newsletter:

The team in Greenwich put up a formidable fight in the West Thamesmead by-election. We saw messages from our Labour opponents urging their supporters to put in extra shifts and one comment suggested they had brought in people from far outside London! Despite that our team worked hard to deliver more leaflets and knock on more doors which delivered what Party President Mark Pack described as an "impressively large swing". The 24% boost is a testament to that great team work and forms a solid basis for going on to win here in 2026. All credit to our great candidate Steve Day and all of the Greenwich team.
