Lib Dems Double Seats in London & Hold Thank you Event
The Liberal Democrats achieved remarkable success in the 2024 general election, as part of our highly disciplined and targeted campaign strategy, with victories in London and Southeast England contributing significantly to our total of 72 seats nationwide, marking our best performance in over a century and solidifying our resurgence as a major force in British politics.
Our success in the 2024 general election in London included several key gains, including:
- Wimbledon: Paul Kohler successfully captured this southwest London seat, with a majority of over 12,000.
- Sutton and Cheam: Luke Taylor won this London constituency with a majority of 3,800.
- Carshalton and Wallington: Bobby Dean retook this seat with a majority of nearly 8,000.
In addition to these London victories, another significant win came in the London-adjacent constituency of Esher & Walton. This seat, previously held by former Conservative Deputy PM Dominic Raab, was won by Liberal Democrat Monica Harding with a decisive 12,000 vote majority. In another consistuency adjacent to London, Epsom & Ewell, Helen Maguire won by 3,700 votes.
These victories were the result of a well planned campaign of targeting seats in the "Blue Wall" - traditionally Conservative areas with changing political attitudes. Our strategy involved concentrating resources on the most promising areas and explicitly targeting winnable seats.
With Greenwich Borough Lib Dem campaigners focusing our campaigning efforts to maximise our results across London, our results locally were variable due to tactical voting and protest votes:
- In Greenwich & Woolwich, Chris Annous achieved 9% of the vote (3,865)
- In Erith & Thamesmead, Pierce Chalmers achieved 5% of the vote (1,872)
- In Eltham & Chislehurst, Ulysse Abbate achieved 5% of the vote (2,423).
Our thank you event was held in East Greenwich on 19 July, hosted by Chris Annous, our general election candidate for Greenwich & Woolwich, with members of the local party executive committee to thank all our members and supporters who campaigned with us at the recent election.
The meet-up at the Star of Greenwich was very well attended. It was great to chat to some newly involved canvassers and leaflet deliverers! Look out for more of our social and or politics evenings on the Events page on our website.
