Greenwich Borough Lib Dems visit Islamic Centre
Greenwich Borough Liberal Democrats would like to thank the Greenwich Islamic Centre for their wonderful hospitality on Friday. We were joined by William Houngbo, the London Liberal Democrats Diversity lead.
We learned so much about our local community during the visit and saw the huge amount of work the Centre achieves for people in the local area. We were given a tour of the building and were privileged to visit the prayer halls and learn more about the Islamic faith. We saw how the Mosque, the largest in South London, is a central place for Muslim worshippers in the Royal Borough as well as a community hub that offers safe spaces for activities and support for individuals, families and neighbours.
In its role as a hub for the community, the Centre offers great youth activities, for example, sport, after school classes and girls groups and, as Director Ahmed pointed out, these have huge social value. Evidence shows that youth centres are immensely important for parents who need a break, young people who need a place to study, meet friends or get advice. They also reduce the chance of youth offending. It was inspiring to see the work achieved by the Centre in this area and learn of their plans for the future.
We were saddened to learn of a fatal pedestrian accident that happened outside the Mosque earlier in the year on the busy Plumstead Road. The Mosque is hoping their petition to the Council will result in speed cameras and longer crossing time for pedestrians at the lights.
As-Salamu Alaykum from Greenwich Liberal Democrats and thank you once again!
